The Amazon

After only two days at Iguassu, we had to pack up our (still pretty damp) clothes for our next stop ... the Amazon.
We stayed at a jungle lodge http://www.amazon-village.com.br/index.html located on Puraquequara Lake, a three hour boat trip down the Amazon from Maneus. The river levels were still about 6m high, so we had the uncanny experience of paddling in a canoe through the tree tops (could almost hear David Attenborough: "high in the canopy of the amazon rainforest ...") and because the water is like a black mirror, all you can see is trees above, and reflections of trees below giving the impression that you are floating through the air - sadly none of my photos managed to capture this wierd feeling.
We were taken on a night paddle to catch a caiman, it was somewhat scary to see all the pairs of eyes shining at us in the torchlight, but reassuring that when the guide suddenly plunged into the river to catch one he came back with a mere baby, only about a metre long, to be passed round for inspection!

Next we flew to Iguassu Falls - the most spectacular waterfalls - on the border of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. We got absolutely DRENCHED in the spray, then went on a boat which took us right under the falls, which was brilliant!

After a whirlwind sightseeing trip in Rio, we went to stay with a friend at Florianopolis, on the Ilha Santa Caterina - south of Sao Paolo. We visited some beautiful beaches and had terrific sea food meals - especially at a small bar on Costa Lagoa.
