on the train

View all 6 photos...
had to come back from cornwall to london by train ... and the services were all upside down because they were were doing 'essential repair work' on the tracks over the holiday period. the journey usually takes less than four hours, but today it took nearly seven! there was flooding on the track, two trains had been cancelled altogether, so there were three trainsful of passengers squashed onto the one, very delayed service (and to cap it all the buffet had run out of food before i even got on.)
however, the journey passed through some spectacular scenery, going right alongside the sea at dawlish and also along the river estuaries of the tamar and the exe - the first train i was on had filthy windows so i couldn't take any pictures at all, but on the last train from plymouth to london (via much of devon, somerset, wiltshire, and buckinghamshire) i got a seat in first class (they were letting anyone sit anywhere) with lovely clean windows ... and as i got my camera out, so did the guy opposite ... as he made the journey regularly he knew when all the best photo-opportunities were coming up, and he also gave me loads of useful tips. so i managed to capture some quite good photos from the moving train. (you can see him in the reflection in #4)
check out this website he told me about:
http://science.nasa.gov/spaceweather/aurora/gallery_01dec03.htm amazing photos!

of course i did! ... i'm waiting to see his photos from the same trip appear

there can't be many stations set in such pretty countryside (you may be able to tell from the number of pics i took that the train was somewhat late!)

drive to cornwall

View all 9 photos...
today i drove my dad back to his home in cornwall - the weather forecast was for rain spreading from the west, so we anticipated a pretty dreadful journey. However, it turned out to be one of those beautiful golden winter days (which meant that i had to keep pulling over to take pics!) Here are a few taken from the roadside and some of the beaches near newquay.

Woah! These are lovely! Thanks for sharing!!! Tue 30-Dec-2003 17:56

we took the grandparents for a drive to see the christmas lights in the west end of london ... lots of blur, because most were taken from the car window as we drove past, but nice impressions, (at least i think so!)

Splendid job of capturing the city! More so that you did it from a moving car! Sun 28-Dec-2003 14:10

at the carol concert

View all 9 photos...
quite a few surreptitious tears were wiped at my grandaughter's school carol concert - the programme followed a fairly traditional line, with the nativity and favourity carols (chosen by staff and parents, with the children reading out the reasons for each choice) and culminating with a beautiful rendition of "C is for the christmas tree ..."
sorry the photos are so blurred, i couldn't use a flash and had to try to shoot without attracting too much attention!

Happy Christmas to everyone!

Kids and Christmas...what a combination. These are special. Thanks for sharing them with us. Merry Christmas, Granny Sue! Thu 25-Dec-2003 17:45
