i have been trying to photograph the birds that visit my garden for ages ... now i have got a litle tripod on the kitchen windowsill, and the photos are getting better (thanks for the advice chris) ... still have to shoot through the glass though, cos as soon as i go outside they fly away (i know, i know, i should build a hide).
the greenfinches are very brave - they come right up to feed from the plastic feeder stuck to the window, but unless i use the flash (which scares them) the photos all come out in silhouette - any advice to solve this?

Birding is a semi-hobby of mine, but photographing them is another thing. I'm never quite quick enough Sun 4-Jan-2004 01:29

To catch the birds without a flash, overexpose by a stop or two or take you meter reading from the birds. You can also try to lighten the photos in silhouette using photoshop. Sun 4-Jan-2004 04:05

You are so lucky to have such bio-diversity. All I get is sparrows and Starlings - they do not get fed BTW. Gold finches LOVE tessels (spelling?). I've tried to pjotograph goldfinches on tessels before, but somehow they just seem to know that one is about to press the shutter release. I think they use telepathy. Mon 5-Jan-2004 11:02
