Sarratt II

View all 9 photos...
here we have reached the River Chess, which was pretty flooded at the time - next time we come i'll have to remember my binoculars (as well as the wellies) because apparently there are loads of birds in the reeds. when we found we couldn't get across the river because of the high water level, we returned up the hill (pheww!) to Sarratt, which has a very picturesque village green, with a couple of pubs and some very attractive flint and bargeboard cottages. tomorrow i'll load up the final set, showing the ancient hedgerows we passed on the way (bet you can't wait!!)

Sarratt is in the Chilterns - about 20 miles to the north west of london - it is a popular place for commuters as there is a good rail link into the city, so properties here are pretty expensive!! Wed 21-Jan-2004 00:14

Sarratt I

View all 9 photos...
This Sunday afternoon's walk took us to Sarratt, which is a very pretty village in the Chilterns - we found the details of the footpaths to follow from an excellent site I have just discovered called www.walkingworld.com - they have hundreds of walks around the UK and are now expanding to Europe: you choose your walk then print out details, including an ordnance survey map of the area - brilliant!
We were a bit late setting out, so we only managed to do the first part of this walk, and anyway we should have worn wellie boots because when we got down to the river (see tomorrow's entry) the path was ankle deep with floodwater so we had to turn back. But we will definitely return as the countryside is very beautiful in this part of the Chilterns.

St Etheldreda's Church, Old Hatfield

View all 12 photos...
These shots of the church and surrounding houses were taken in late afternoon. The very grand red brick building (photos #11 and #12) is the old palace of Hatfield House, with the family graveyard in front.

Some historical facts:
The original palace at Hatfield was completed in 1497 for Bishop Morton of Ely. At the Dissolution, King Henry VIII seized the palace and his daughter Mary Tudor lived there. During her reign, her half-sister, the Princess Elizabeth was kept virtually a prisoner at Hatfield. There in 1558, while sitting under an oak tree in the park (the tree is still standing!) she learned of her accession to the throne as Queen Elizabeth I. It then became the home of Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and still is the home of the current Earl of Salisbury, although they live in the 'new' palace which was completed in 1611 - I will try to take some good photos of the new palace, which is very grand, when the park re-opens to the public at Easter.

The north chapel in the Church of St Etheldreda was built in 1618 as a family chapel for the Cecils - the nave was rebuilt in 1872 - there are some excellent stained glass windows here - the one shown was designed by Burne-Jones and made by Morris and Co. My photos of the carol concert were taken inside this church.

Thanks for the story along with nice fotos. Enjoy UR time >> Sun 18-Jan-2004 11:51

the weather here in london doesn't seem to know what to do ... one minute its grey and drizzly, next its threatening snow, now all of a sudden the sun is shining and it is a beautiful crisp winter day!
