here are a few photos i have dug up from various cardboard boxes whilst in the process of trying to create some order. their discovery has set me off on the fascinating task of researching my family history ... and it is keeping me very busy on these dreary unphotogenic days!

fly to the moon with ultra ZOOOOOOOM ...
|
|
been trying out a few more features of my camera (Olympus C750 UZ), and this week it is the ultrazoom.
at the weekend we had a couple of clear frosty evenings, so the first night I just tinkered around with the manual settings (images #1,2,3), but although with a bit of brightening up with photoshop i was pleased with the result, unfortunately i didn't keep a record of what the settings actually were (duh!).
so the next night i experimented with the bracket feature, where you take a series of photos and the camera changes the settings a fraction for each one. verrry clever, don't you think? (#4 is f8 1/13, #5 is f8 1/20, #6 is f8 1/40 - all set at ISO 50 - think i'll try changing that next time we have a clear sky). these haven't had any adjustments made, just cropped.
i also just found a website where they recommend you set the camera to black and white, so i'll have to try that too .... never a dull moment when you've got a camera to play with, eh?
anyway, these are the best ones i think.

Bath
|
|
while we were down in the west country, we went to Bath and visited the recently reopened Roman Baths and the Pump Room, where you can taste the waters and take tea amongst the palms in the Georgian tea rooms whilst listening to a string quartet. If you get the chance, this is well worth the somewhat exhorbitant entrance fee ... allow a couple of hours at least to see all the exhibits and listen to the audio tour.
and now the history (largely taken from the Eyewitness travel guide to Great Britain):
according to legend, the 'Sacred Spring', a natural hot spring at the centre of the roman baths, was first discovered in 860BC by King Bladud who cured his leprosy by rolling in the hot mud. The Romans built sophisticated baths and heated chambers around the spring in the first century AD, together with a temple dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva. In the 18thcentury it became a fashionable spa - astonishingly the great lead-lined bath (shown in photos #6-8 ) was not discovered until the 1870s as it lay beneath later building work, including the Pump Rooms where the gentry 'took the waters' (it tastes disgusting, trust me!). The water still flows from the sacred spring (#4) into the corner of the great bath at a constant 46'C - sadly you can't actually go in the baths, because the water is untreated.

these were taken on my last walk down in Wiltshire ... it was very muddy underfoot but lots of interesting stuff to see, especially alongside the river.
