a few of the beaches of Ilha Santa Caterina, BRAZIL
The Ilha Santa Caterina is an island about 45 km long and 15 km wide which is linked to the mainland by two bridges. It has a remarkably varied landscape, ranging from enormous sand dunes, to pine forests and Atlantic rain forest - with 42 beaches dotted around the coast and a spine of mountains running down the centre of the island. The beaches on the east coast facing the Atlantic are famous for surfing, whilst those on the sheltered west coast and around the two large inland lakes are calm and peaceful.

Florianopolis, Ilha Santa Catarina, BRAZIL
Florianopolis (affectionately known as Floripa) is the state capital of Santa Caterina, and the city sits across both sides of the bridges linking the Ilha Santa Caterina to the mainland - the old town has cobbled streets, shady squares, a colourful market and picturesque colonial buildings, whilst the more recent developments along the Beira-Mar Norte provide chic apartments and hotels, excellent restaurants and good shopping opportunities.

Itamaraca, Pernambuco, BRAZIL
Just 40 km north of Recife lies the island of Itamaraca at the southern end of which is Forte Orange - site of numerous battles between the Dutch and Portuguese in the 17th century. This is also the home of the Ecoparque Peixe-Boi, a sanctuary for the endangered peixe-boi (manatee or sea cow).
We took a sort of motorised pedalo across to the strip of beach you can see in photo #1 for a delicious lunch of freshly caught seafood.

Olinda, Brazil
The beautiful town of Olinda, founded in 1535, is located about 6km north of Recife in Pernambuco, Brazil. According to the invaluable Lonely Planet guide to Brazil "it is one of the largest and best-preserved colonial cities in Brazil, with twisting streets of colourful old houses and a plethora of scenic churches in various states of decay and repair ... although many buildings were originally constructed in the 16th century, the Dutch burnt almost everything in 1631. Consequently, the majority of what you now see was actually reconstructed at a later date."
While we there we also visited the Oficina Brennand http://www.brennand.com.br/ where the artist Francisco Brennand works and displays his intriguing ceramics and paintings and also the Instituto Ricardo Brennand http://www.institutoricardobrennand.org.br/index2.html - both well worth a visit.
Even though we missed Carnaval at Olinda by a week, many of the decorations were still up and it just happened to be Olinda's 371st birthday ... an excellent excuse for the carnival costumes to be brought back out for more processions and music in the streets!
If you have the opportunity to visit Olinda, make sure you stay at the Pousada Quatro Cantos http://www.pousada4cantos.com.br/
